When I think of Keane , my first thoughts aren’t ones of innovation and experimentation. I suppose it was quite fresh to do away with their guitarist and rely on vocals, keyboards, and drums to provide the music that has touched so many of us. But since their first album in 2004, it’s been business as usual, with little deviation from the expected except Tom Chaplin’s dalliances with drink and drugs. I don’t think anyone expected that. What I do associate Keane with is pop music of the highest order; easy-listening, uplifting, and joyful.

Yes, I use Linux for most stuff, but I organise my music using iTunes under Windows. I’ve done it this way for years. Last night I brought the music system in my car into the 21st century by installing a Pioneer DEH-P4100SD. As well as CD and radio it’s got an aux in, iPod compatibility, USB and an SD card slot. I picked up a 16GB SD card for £20 and stuck a few tracks on there. Unfortunately, even though the head unit supports ID3 tags for artist/album/song names, it only supports browsing based on filename.

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon implementing the KMod hack on my Kaossilator thanks to a most excellent set of instructions . I used a DE-9 male connector, so I actually have 2 pins free for potential future additions (I wonder if I can cram something in there to output a MIDI-compatible tempo clock signal based on whatever is driving the little dot on the display). I have plans for two things to plug into it now. The first will be a simple little stub that just sits in the connector, with a 47K resistor and a switch in series between the SUO and SUI pins.

kind of high. i’ve been working on my ian curtis icon. i started it about a week ago, maybe it’s been two weeks. i had gotten too far along before i noticed the placement of the nose was completely wrong, had to erase it and the right eye, which turned me off for a few days. i decided to attack it tonight and it’s looking really beautiful. i guess i shouldn’t compare myself to goya (despite one of my teachers doing so) but these drawings really look overworked in comparison to those etchings i saw yesterday.

I love kinetic typography. I love good typography anyway, but add a level of motion to it, and I’m all there. This one by Ronnie Bruce is particularly well-done, using different fonts, weights, sizes, and motion to depict the poem “Totally Like Whatever, You Know?” by Taylor Mali to great effect. It doesn’t hurt the poem is a good one, too (and convicting, as I’m often guilty of speaking in questions, usually as a passive-aggressive defense tactic).

I slept so horribly last night. I had some horrible nightmares. I woke up crying and stumbled down to work two hours later than usual. Josh told me that I was so out of it this morning he couldn’t wake me up for anything. My dad told me that I looked awful and told me to only work until lunch – that nobody was going to be in the office anyway so there wasn’t any point. I was relieved. My dad left early from work today to bring my mom to her surgery.

I love hearing good covers of great songs , and am especially enamored of how this happens more often within the boundaries of country and spirituals, with original works or traditional arrangements passed among artists.
