The 1000 Islands Music Festival has announced its line up and there are some D-Rockers invited. Hello Beautiful, Warped 45s and the Free Press will join Simple Plan, Akon, Kardinal Offishall, Ill Scarlett, Plain White Tees, Lights, The Arkells and many more over the weekend of Aug 13, 14 and 15. The festival takes place at the Dingman Farm in Gananoque. Three Day tickets are a penny under $140 + applicable taxes and surcharges. Camping passes are available at $20 per night.

I’ve got a fair few social quiz games in my collection; a couple of Scene It titles along with Buzz on the PS3. One of the highlights of the summer music season, the All Points West Music & Arts Festival , will return to Liberty State Park in Jersey City (just across the river from Manhattan) on July 31, August 1 and August 2. Following last year’s very successful Radiohead -led inaugural event, this year’s festival features Coldplay , MGMT , Vampire Weekend and Tool . This should be interesting. Weary of possible leaks, Jay-Z is rumored to be hand delivering The Blueprint 3 to Atlantic Records label brass in London upon completion.  If he does indeed do this, it will be a great case study in album leaks.  I personally think that it won’t make a difference, because my belief is whole album leaks usually happen in the pressing stage when one missing album won’t make a difference.  But as we’ve pointed out before Jay likes to set trends and this is no exception.

I’ve blogged before about the decline in book readership.  In fact, the number of book stores has dropped some 20% in the last 3 years.  It’s not that people don’t want to be learned.  Rather, people no longer prefer to carry around a full length paper book.  What was no big deal has become large, cumbersome and heavy.  This isn’t how we described books until we started reading everything imaginable on electronic devices.  The new solutions made the old approach less desirable.  The market shifted. 

Last week was birthday week, rah rah rah! I turned 29 (for real) and my little sisters turned 3, although if you ask Jane she turned 5, we are not sure why exactly. In 2004, when I set out to write “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” I wanted to tell the story of the Dean campaign, but what happened on that campaign was about more than just an underdog story, about more than the hundreds of thousands of people who signed up to join the movement, it was a look into how technology has began to shape our politics, this country, and our society. I realized what’s been bugging me about the Harry Potter movies and later books when I was picking up a decaf at Starbucks in Larchmont. It was revealed online yesterday that Adam “MCA” Yauch, who is a member of the American rap group Beastie Boys, has just been diagnosed with cancer. According to Reuters , the band has now canceled their upcoming concerts and will push back the release of their new album. Adam posted a video online, explaining to fans that doctors had found a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland, but reassured them that it is very treatable in most cases. Congratulations to comic book author and film director Brian Pulido , whose new horror movie, The Graves , has been added to the After Dark Horrorfest, which will hit theaters next January. As it has been in previously years, the Horrorfest will feature eight movies that run one week at a time. The Graves is the first film added to the schedule, which runs January 29th to February 5th, with a new movie every night. Pulido is the author of the Lady Death and War Angel comics, and he’s been a music video director for a few years.

Today, on a whim, I pulled out the trombones to clean them up. If you’re wondering, Trombone s ? Plural? , I have two: the one I’ve had since middle school and then the one left to me by my late Grandpop. In servicing them, I discovered I no longer have a snake, slide oil, or a polishing cloth. So I went with my roommate, Jeff, to a music store to remedy the problem while he looked into drumsticks and other percussion stuff. He has a drum kit coming. Electronic, I think, so it won’t cause too much of a ruckus in the basement.

Man this video should have been way sicker. I honestly thought this was one of of the best songs this summer as far as a fun dancy joint that you can play for your less knowledgeable friends. Saturday, I went with my dad and my nephew to the NYC Musical Saw Festival where they were part of an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest Musical Saw ensemble. No, really, I’m not making this up. The previous record was set in Poland with 27 saw players, or sawists. In Astoria, this weekend they had 53 musical saw players on the stage to play Ave Maria. Now, before you listen to this, I want you to understand something.

I got round to listening to some more Blue Oyster Cult the other day, playing a few tracks from each of their first few albums.   I really liked quite a lot of them, but…  I can’t remember anything about them, what they were called or how they went.  I just enjoyed them at the time.  Nothing as memorable as their big hit single, so I can see how it overshadowed the rest of their work, but I shall probably put their stuff on a bit more in the future.

We had a shocker last night. A close analysis suggests that this was because we didn’t know the answers to a lot of the questions. In our defence, there were three Dancing with the Stars questions. So, I survived the weekend, and with friends headed up this way to stay with my friend J, it was a fun time hanging around with old friends. J is living in Iowa City moving just outside of Cedar Rapids.  So, we hit a lot of the cool local places – The Mill (pasta/sandwich shop with outside patio and live music), Fair Grounds (free trade coffeehouse and vegan cafe) and Sanctuary (sounds like a goth club, but it’s a grill and pub with one of the greatest beer lists ever).  So plenty of Tanqueray, Fuller’s Ale, and (because it doesn’t sober up, it makes you a wide awake drunk) Peruvian coffee.
